List of things my Psych teacher is: biphobe, homophobe, elitist, and all-around bigot

(I’ve decided to separate her identity into two: the Stats teacher is cranky but bearable, while the Psych teacher is a cheerful, opinionated, and bigoted bitch.)

So, I’m thinking I should just make this a daily thing. “The discriminatory and all-around offensive things my Psych teacher says on a daily basis!” or something…

Anyway, to recap, my Psych teacher has already said these:

• Bisexuality does not exist. (The people who act like they enjoy having sex with both men and women? They’re totally faking.)
• Homosexuality is a choice. (Never mind that every single damn thing about homosexuality in the actual Psychology textbook states, specifically, that homosexuality is not a choice and that one is born homosexual. Oh, maybe the textbook and all other statistics are just plain wrong, and maybe I should just stay in this tunnel for the rest of my life.)
• Pro-choice = pro-death. (You’re either for abortion or against abortion. “But I’m for a woman’s rights; I’m not for abortion!” — Nope. That’s just a nicer way to say that you kill babies.)

Isn’t she just a ray of sunshine? (Yeah, I’ve been sharpening my kitchen knife daily.)

Well, if you can believe it, she reached an all-time low today. Let’s start from least offensive to most offensive, shall we?

• Humans are vastly superior to all other living organisms. All animals’ intelligence cannot compare to human intelligence. That’s why it’s ethically right for us to experiment on them. (Yes, this is the least offensive.)
• Homosexuality used to be a mental disorder. Because the doctors decided to take it off the list, homosexuals can’t get treatment for their disease anymore. (She also mentioned how some “ex-gay” program worked and how some didn’t. Well.)
• Because homosexuality was taken off the list of mental disorders, now people think it’s okay to have sex with little kids and animals. (Slippery slope argument!!)

Now, my friend actually expresses the biggest problem with the last statement pretty well: “As horrible as this may sound, the people who’re having sex with animals were already having sex with animals before all that happened.” Also, according to my English teacher (and Wikipedia), any “slippery slope” argument is a logical fallacy. In other words, it doesn’t make sense. (We can see this in History too. The domino theory was basically the “slippery slope” theory. Well, we clearly lost at Vietnam, but… the spread of communism? Uh. I don’t see that happening.)

Okay. So, I guess I should put this into perspective. Of course, I modified her politically-correct language in order to highlight the main point. She never specifically said that we are “superior” to animals, but she did say that we were more intelligent and that animals basically can’t think for themselves. She also never said “disease” in regard to homosexuality, but she DID say the first part of that same sentence.

And, the last, very offensive (and over-used) statement was said privately. BUT, it was still said directly to one of my classmates, with the full intention of influencing his perceptions. Oh, yeah, and the only parts that are different about what I wrote and what she said is that instead of “sex with little kids and animals,” she used “pedophilia and bestiality.” I am serious.

Now, the fact that she said these things anger me, sure. But, what angers me even more is the fact that she says these things in a CLASSROOM. She’s a teacher, for God’s sakes! A teacher is supposed to set a good example for her students because she’s one of the most influential people in their lives.

What worries me the most is that some of my classmates will actually BELIEVE what she says, that they will think “oh, homosexuality isn’t right because it’s a mental disorder” or “homosexuality leads to bestiality and pedophilia” or something similarly ridiculous! This isn’t even politics! Fundamentally, she’s degrading fellow human beings because they do not conform to her standards of love and sex! How fucked up is that?

And, here’s the scary thing: a lot of her students actually like her.

I, for one, have to admit that, if she didn’t bring up so much crap during class, she would be a fantastic teacher. She’s funny, witty, and she always seems to know what she’s talking about. Of course, the fact is that she does degrade and condemn other human beings and that just throws any remnants of her credibility out the window.

Here’s another scary thing: One of my classmates actually believed her today when she talked about homosexuality as a mental disorder.

So, I (not-so) calmly explained to my classmate that our Psych teacher was a total bigoted bitch. (I said “bitch” twice for emphasis.) And then I proceeded to explain homosexuality in easy to understand terms. In the end, it seems that she wasn’t won over for moral reasons but for scientific reasons. (I explained about overpopulation and adoption, and my classmate seemed to like that argument the most, for some reason.)

See, this is what I’m most afraid of: that those people who really don’t feel one way or another towards this issue are swayed by my teacher’s words to believe that homosexuality is a scientific sin and should be eradicated. Or something.

And now that I’ve gotten that all out. I feel like I should really talk to my mom about this. I can’t just keep skirting these issues with her. I just can’t deal with anyone so secure in their bigotry that she thinks it’s wrong to say good things about the Queer community. And, she really needs to understand that this isn’t just a matter of making the old Asian ladies in America uncomfortable—this is a human rights issue, and I expect her to treat it as such from now on.
